Strawberry & Raw Honey Kefir Smoothie

Boost your gut health and please your taste buds with this yummy strawberry kefir smoothie! It’s the perfect healthy snack for a hot day. The whole family will love it!

Here’s how to make it:

Yield: about 3 cups (24 fl oz)

KEFIR SUPPLIES:

  • one-quart glass jar
  • jar ring or rubber band
  • cheesecloth, clean tea towel, or coffee filter—or anything else that’s clean, breathable, and will keep bugs and dust out!

KEFIR INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Tbsp. active milk kefir grains
  • 4 cups Redmond raw milk*

SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups kefir
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 2 heaping Tbsp. Redmond raw honey

DIRECTIONS:

Make the Kefir

  1. Place the kefir grains and milk in the one-quart jar. Cover it with the cheesecloth or substitute, secured by the jar ring or rubber band. Place the jar in a warm spot (68–85ºF) out of direct sunlight to culture.
  2. Culturing generally takes 12–24 hours, depending on the temperature of the room. Watch for a slightly thickened mixture with a pleasant aroma. If it has a tart and tangy taste, it’s ready!
  3. Strain the grains from the finished kefir by pouring kefir into a bowl through a fine mesh sieve. Store your kefir in the fridge and enjoy it for up to 3 months!
  4. Place the grains back in the jar with 4 more cups of milk. Repeat the culturing process to make more kefir, or place the jar in the fridge to store. If you’re storing your grains, be sure to feed them once a week by straining them and placing them back in fresh milk.

Make the Smoothie

  1.  Blend kefir, strawberries, and honey in a blender until smooth. Best enjoyed the same day. Drink up!

*Note: Always use caution when using raw dairy products. You may want to substitute with pasteurized milk if you want to play it safe, but raw milk kefir is our favorite!
